LYOCELL

Similar to silk, lyocell is often called “plant silk” and has become a popular choice in the textile industry thanks to its breathable and hard-wearing properties. Lyocell is also an excellent substitute for viscose as it is more environmentally friendly.

Lyocell is a long-lasting and hard-wearing plant fibre.

Lyocell is an ecological plant-based fibre that is created using wood pulp from eucalyptus, bamboo or hardwood trees. It is a 100% cellulose-based artificial fibre. Lyocell is made from cellulose extract, a protein naturally found in wood.

When processing it into fabric, this cellulose is dissolved in a non-toxic solvent that is 99% recycled after use. Additionally, lyocell produces 10 times more material than cotton per cultivated hectare and requires very little water during its manufacture. While cotton requires 5,000 litres of water to produce 1 kg of material, lyocell requires less than 1,000 litres.

The origin of lyocell.

The wood pulp used in the production of Lyocell comes from trees planted specially for lyocell production. The pine, eucalyptus and bamboo forests are certified as sustainable, and the trees used consume very little water. For example, eucalyptus only needs what it gets from rainwater to grow, without pesticides or an intensive irrigation system.

Thus, the low environmental impact of lyocell is due to the fact that its production stays within an almost closed-loop circuit where the materials are constantly recycled, cleansed and reused.

At Native Spirit, we pay special attention to the quality of our clothes and to the comfort they offer. Our designers have developed pieces using Lyocell such as our iconic shorts for ladies and men (NS720 and NS721), which are bio-washed with enzymes, and composed of 70% Lyocell and 30% linen.
